The fusion reaction of $$^{48}$$Ca + $$^{248}$$Cm $$rightarrow$$ $$^{296}$$Lv$$^{ast}$$ was studied using the gas-filled recoil-ion separator GARIS at RIKEN. A total of seven $$alpha$$ and spontaneous-fission decay chains were observed, which would originate from the reaction products of the element 116, $$^{292}$$Lv and $$^{293}$$Lv. Decay properties observed in the chains are in good agreement with the previously published ones. However, one of the chains showed a discrepancy, indicating the new spontaneous-fission branch in $$^{285}$$Cn or the production of the new isotope $$^{294}$$Lv.

Decay modes of heavy and superheavy nuclei

Koura, Hiroyuki

RIKEN Accelerator Progress Report, Vol.38, P. 9, 2005/05

We calculate proton-emission partial half lives and discuss dominant decay modes in the heavy and superheavy nuclidic region. The proton-emission partial half-lives are calculated from the one-dimensional WKB method with single-proton potentials and a mass formula that our group has developed. The calculated half lives well reproduce experimental ones in order of 100 or 1/100 which is similar predictability to other predictions as the alpha decay and the beta decay. We apply this result to calculation of branching ratios of nuclear decays considered the alpha decay, beta decay and spontaneous fission in the heavy and superheavy nuclide region. In this analysis we point out that proton-emitting nuclei are expected to be in the unknown proton-rich nuclidic region with $$N = 126$$. On the other hand, proton-rich nuclei with $$130 < N <160$$ have much shorter spontaneous-fission half-lives than ones of proton emissions on this calculation, therefore we conclude that ground-state proton emissions would not occur in that region.

Neutron-rich fermium isotopes $$^{256}$$Fm and $$^{258}$$Fm and lawrencium isotope $$^{259}$$Lr were produced in the multinucleon transfer reaction on $$^{254}$$Es target with heavy-ion beam and in the heavy-ion fusion reaction on $$^{248}$$Cm target with $$^{15}$$N beam, respectively. Reaction products were mass-separated with an on-line isotope separator (ISOL), and spontaneous fission (SF) of these isotopes were measured. It was found that the mass distribution of the SF of $$^{256}$$Fm was asymmetric, while that of $$^{258}$$Fm was sharp symmetric, which confirmed the previous experimental results. On the other hand, the SF of $$^{259}$$Lr seemed to contain both symmetric and asymmetric mass distributions. On the basis of the present results of the mass and total kinetic energy distributions, we discussed the mechanism of fission for these isotopes.

The Ibaraki Block of the Kanto Branch of The Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers (JSME) organized a seminar for first-year students of the Department of Mechanical Systems Engineering, College of Engineering at the Ibaraki University. As an introductory seminar to the university, I give a presentation on career-paths for engineers in JAEA at the 19th "I understand" engineers lecture for students.
